When Your Body Reacts to Everything

It is almost never one thing. It is a pattern. Several systems tipping at once, feeding each other, until the body starts reacting to everything.
Two Views, One Pattern
We have known Jessica for a few years now, long enough to watch her work from the outside and keep coming back to it. Earlier this year she had us on her show, The Body Ethos Podcast, and we spent an episode tracing oral health out into the rest of the body. She kept steering the conversation toward what connects things rather than what separates them, which is the whole reason we do this work.
She reads these patterns from the other end of the body. Jessica works downstream, in the gut, the hormones, the immune system. We work upstream, in the mouth. Partway through that recording it became clear we were describing the same river from opposite ends of it.
So we asked her to write this one with us. Part One walks the patterns she sees most often in practice, with our notes on where the mouth turns up inside them. Part Two goes underneath, to the ground those patterns share, and then upstream into Mouth City.

Pattern Recognition - Rethinking "Root Causes"
It's common in the functional medicine and holistic health space to hear the term "root cause". While identifying root causes is essential for lasting wellness, the concept can sometimes be misleading to the everyday person searching for that one magic bullet.
The reality is that it's rarely just one single symptom or area of imbalance driving multi-system dysfunction. Instead, it's often a constellation of symptoms and areas in the body showing signs of imbalance that either showed up around the same time, or that have been slowly accumulating for years.
The "root cause" typically isn't just one thing (although that would be nice). More often, it's a multi-system imbalance driven by several factors like immune activation from infections or toxins, nutritional deficiencies, stress/trauma, hormonal shifts, environmental exposures, and gut imbalances all working together.
The good news is that when we start mapping these patterns and understanding how they interconnect, a clear picture emerges as to why your body's systems have lost their balance. By addressing these root imbalances systemically rather than chasing after a single cause, you can help restore your body's resilience and function from the ground up.
Here are some common symptoms and root causes drivers I see to systematic imbalances:
Mold Exposure
In 2025, the The Environmental Protection Agency reported that 85% of buildings in the US experienced water damage in the past. What's even more alarming is that mold growth starts in the first 24-48hrs of moisture exposure. And the mold isn't the worse part, it's the mycotoxins and toxic bacteria that grow under these conditions. Mycotoxins are extremely toxic and don't just cause allergies and sinus symptoms. In fact, mycotoxins are so detrimental to human health that some countries have attempted to concentrate doses of mycotoxins for biological warfare. This is honestly a good word picture - mycotoxins create a biological warfare against every system of your body.. Often I see the following symptoms:
Nervous System
Dizziness, headaches, numbness, static shocks, temperature regulation problems, cognitive fog, difficulty with word retrieval, difficulty with concentration, unusual sensitivity to smell, light, or sound, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, irritability (mold rage), mood swings, frequent waking during sleep, insomnia, night sweats, tremors, nerve pain, tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Endocrine System
Hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, weight gain, infertility challenges, persistent fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest, adrenal fatigue, blood sugar imbalances
Digestive System
Digestive problems, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, food sensitivities
Musculoskeletal System
Joint pain, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, stiffness, fibromyalgia-like symptoms
Urinary System
Frequent urination, bladder pain, interstitial cystitis
Integumentary System (Skin)
Skin issues, rashes, hives, eczema, psoriasis, increased sweating
Respiratory System
Chronic cough, shortness of breath, asthma-like symptoms, sinus congestion, runny nose
Cardiovascular System
Palpitations, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure
Immune System
Chronic infections, autoimmune disorders, mast cell activation, histamine intolerance, allergies, chemical sensitivities, frequent illness, slow wound healing
Mold exposure can trigger dysfunction in every system of the body — all simultaneously. The body isn't malfunctioning; it's responding to an environmental threat.

Histamine Response
When we think of histamine, we often think of allergies and taking an "anti-histamine" medication like Allegra, Zyrtec or Benadryl. What many don't realize is that histamine is a necessary chemical in the body — involved in immune signaling, digestion, and even neurotransmitter function. But when histamine accumulates faster than the body can break it down - either from immune activation from an infection (like an oral infection) or environmental stressor (like mold) or from high histamine foods that an imbalanced gut struggles to break down fast enough - one doesn't just experiencing sneezing, instead histamine over-load can look like:
- Headaches, anxiety, fatigue, sleep issues, and brain fog
- Heavy and painful periods, irregular cycles, PMS/PMDD
- Flushing, hives, eczema, rashes, hot flashes/sweating, chills
- Acid reflux/heartburn, bloating, diarrhea/constipation and gas
- Chemical and food sensitivities (especially alcohol, aged cheese, fermented foods, and left overs)
- Heart palpitations, low blood pressure, blood sugar swings, joint pain
- Itchy throat, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, nasal congestion, runny nose
Clients often say "I feel like I'm reacting to everything," or "I can eat food one day and be fine, but the next time I eat it, I have a terrible reaction." Or female clients might say "my symptoms are worse during certain parts of my cycle."
Histamine intolerance, or in more severe cases, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is often triggered by increased gut permeability (leaky gut), hormonal imbalances, environmental toxin exposure (like mold), chronic infections (like gut or oral infections), and nervous system dysregulation. This complex response from the body is an alarm indicating that multiple body systems are under stress and out of balance.

One of those sources of immune activation sits closer than most people expect. Chronic low grade inflammation in the mouth, like gum disease or a lingering infection under an old crown or root canal, keeps the immune system in a constant state of alert. That steady activation is one more source of immune load, and because it works quietly in the background, it rarely gets connected to the flushing, the reflux, or the restless sleep it may be feeding. It is one reason two people can eat nearly the same diet and handle histamine completely differently.
It's crucial to recognize that histamine itself is not the enemy (although it feels like it to those that suffer from histamine intolerance or MCAS). However, the problem with histamine dysfunction is that it can create a vicious cycle. When histamine levels are high, it can exacerbate gut permeability, inflammation, and nervous system reactivity, which in turn can lead to even more histamine release. This is why it's essential to focus on stabilizing the system first, before attempting any aggressive detoxification or antimicrobial protocols.
Many practitioners and clients make the mistake of immediately pursuing cleanses, detoxes, or antimicrobial protocols in the pursuit of getting to the "root cause" without first addressing the foundational imbalances (i.e. diet, stress, blood sugar balance, lifestyle, toxin exposures, and nervous system dysfunction) that are contributing to histamine dysregulation. The aggressive approach often backfires and makes symptoms worse, as it can further stress an already overburdened system.
Hormonal Shifts
Hormonal transitions — whether related to the menstrual cycle, perimenopause, postpartum recovery, or thyroid function — have a way of making symptoms that were previously manageable suddenly feel overwhelming. The body's tolerance threshold changes.
Common patterns I observe:
- Increased inflammatory responses, including joint aches or skin changes, in the week before menstruation
- New or worsened food sensitivities that seem to come out of nowhere
- Disrupted sleep, particularly early waking or difficulty returning to sleep
- Brain fog or emotional volatility tied to specific phases of the cycle
- Histamine sensitivity that worsens premenstrually or in perimenopause
- A general sense that the body has "changed" — that what worked before no longer does
Hormones don't act in isolation. Estrogen, for example, influences immune function, gut permeability, and histamine receptor activity. During certain times of a woman's cycle when estrogen rises, typically a few days before ovulation and during the luteal phase (the last half of the cycle), if estrogen isn't balanced properly by progesterone, we see symptoms, especially those related to histamine intolerance, as estrogen stimulates mast cells to release histamine. This can cause many symptoms that women are familiar with – mood swings, fatigue, headaches, bowel movement changes, sleep issues, and water retention/bloating.
Connecting this back to mycotoxins, certain mycotoxins like Zearalenone (ZEN) act as potent endocrine disruptors, mimicking the hormone estrogen. As we know that estrogen triggers histamine, it creates a complex web of interconnected systems and root cause drivers.
Furthermore, your gut has a special collection of bacteria called the Estrobolome, which helps men and women break down estrogen as we naturally have fluctuations either from the menstrual cycle or from toxins called xenoestrogens, which are endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Mycotoxins like ZEN, as well as other toxic chemicals, can disrupt your gut microbiome and make it harder for your gut to naturally break down and eliminate estrogen.
When estrogen shifts – as it does naturally throughout life or through toxic exposures – the ripple effects can be felt across many systems at once, highlighting the intricate balance and interplay between hormones, gut health, and overall well-being.

Mold, histamine, hormones, and the gut do not arrive separately. They pool.
Gut Health Patterns
The gut is often where multiple patterns converge. It's a central hub for immune regulation, neurotransmitter production, nutrient absorption, and inflammatory signaling. When gut health is compromised, it rarely stays contained to the digestive system.
What I commonly observe:
- Bloating, gas, or irregular bowel patterns that don't resolve with dietary changes alone
- Skin changes — acne, eczema, or a general dullness — alongside digestive symptoms
- Mood and energy shifts that follow meals or flare with certain foods
- Worsening of reactivity patterns (to foods, chemicals, or environmental triggers)
- A history of antibiotic use, stress, or restricted eating that preceded a shift in how the body responds
What clients often say: "My digestion has never been the same since..." — and that "since" is always a significant stressful period, an infection, medication, a major life transition. The gut holds the timeline.
From The Mouth Lab
The gut holds the timeline, and the mouth often wrote the first entry. Everything that reaches the gut passes through the mouth first, and the oral microbiome is the front end of the same continuous ecosystem rather than a separate one. When the balance of bacteria in the mouth shifts, some of those organisms are swallowed and can travel further down the digestive tract. Research is still mapping how strongly the oral community shapes the gut community, but the direction is becoming clear. The mouth sits upstream. It is part of why we look there first.
The hormone piece works the same way in the mouth. The residents do not change, but the way the tissue responds to them does. We wrote about that in When the Environment Changes.
