About The Mouth Lab

What is The Mouth Lab?+

The Mouth Lab is a virtual oral-systemic wellness company. We offer advanced at-home testing, one-on-one results reviews with our clinical team, and education built around a simple idea: what's happening in your mouth shapes what's happening in the rest of your body.

We work with patients and clinicians who want to understand how oral inflammation, microbial balance, immune health, and lifestyle factors connect to whole-body wellness, and what to do about it.

Does The Mouth Lab diagnose or treat disease?+

No. Our tests, reports, and consultations are educational and informational. They're designed to give you and your providers better information to work with. They're not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Where is The Mouth Lab available?+

We ship tests nationwide across the United States, with international options available in select regions. International availability depends on shipping and laboratory regulations in your country. Reach out if you're not sure and we'll let you know.

How do I know which test to start with?+

Most people start with the Oral Microbiome Test. Bacteria are usually the most actionable place to begin. They're linked to bleeding gums, bad breath, cavities, implant concerns, and inflammation that shows up far from the mouth.

If you're not sure, take our 60-second quiz and we'll recommend the right starting point. Or book a free 15-minute discovery call. We listen first, recommend second, no commitment.

What's in the kit when it arrives?+

Depending on which test you order, your kit contains either a saliva collection tube or a finger-stick dried blood spot card, simple step-by-step instructions, and a prepaid UPS return mailer. Sample collection takes less than a minute and is painless.

What does the report look like?+

You receive a clinician-written report tailored to your results. It explains which bacteria, viruses, or markers were detected, what those levels mean for you specifically, and a personalized plan for next steps. Then we walk you through it together on a 30-minute call.

What's covered in my 30-minute results walkthrough?+

This is what makes us different. Your walkthrough is a one-on-one video call with our clinical team where we:

  • Explain your results in plain language, not just numbers on a page
  • Connect the patterns we see to symptoms or concerns you've shared
  • Build a personalized action plan: diet, lifestyle, targeted products, what to ask your dentist or physician
  • Answer every question you bring

You'll leave the call knowing what to do next.

Is this covered by insurance?+

Coverage depends on your specific plan. The Mouth Lab does not bill insurance directly. We're considered an out-of-network educational and wellness-based service provider. Payment is collected at the time of purchase.

Some patients submit receipts, lab documentation, or itemized records to their insurance for possible reimbursement, but coverage policies vary widely and reimbursement isn't guaranteed. If you want to pursue reimbursement, contact your insurance provider directly to check eligibility and out-of-network options.

Oral Microbiome Test

What is the Oral Microbiome Test?+

It's a saliva-based test that maps the bacteria, viruses, and yeast in your mouth, then flags the ones linked to gum disease, bad breath, cavities, and systemic inflammation. You spit into a tube at home, we send it to a CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited lab, and our clinical team walks you through what showed up.

What can the Oral Microbiome Test show me?+

Your report covers:

  • Oral bacteria and microbial balance
  • Periodontal inflammation patterns
  • Oral dysbiosis (imbalances tied to oral and systemic issues)
  • Biofilm-related bacterial trends
  • Inflammatory-associated organisms
  • Patterns connected to oral-systemic wellness
Is the Oral Microbiome Test the same as a gum disease test?+

It evaluates a lot of what a gum disease screening would, but it goes broader. It maps your whole oral ecosystem, including microbes tied to inflammation, cavities, implants, and oral-systemic health, not just periodontal pathogens.

How is the sample collected?+

A simple at-home saliva collection. Less than a minute, completely painless. Prepaid mailer is included. Drop it at any UPS location.

How long until I get results?+

About 2 to 3 weeks after the lab receives your sample. Once results are in, we reach out to schedule your 30-minute walkthrough.

Genetic Profile

What is the Genetic Profile Test?+

A one-time dried blood spot test that looks at biological patterns related to inflammation, detoxification, immune function, oxidative stress, collagen integrity, and oral-systemic wellness. It's a one-and-done test. Your DNA doesn't change, so you only ever need to do this once.

How is the genetic sample collected?+

An at-home dried blood spot collection using a minimally invasive finger-stick. Takes a few minutes at most.

Does the Genetic Profile diagnose disease?+

No. This test is educational and informational. It's not designed to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. It's designed to help you and your providers understand inherited patterns that may influence your oral and systemic health.

Can genetics actually affect oral health?+

Research suggests genetics influence how your body handles inflammation, tissue repair, immune regulation, and microbial interactions. All of which show up in oral health. Knowing your patterns helps personalize what you do about them.

Vitamin D Test

Why does The Mouth Lab offer a Vitamin D Test?+

Vitamin D is foundational to immune regulation, inflammatory balance, bone metabolism, and tissue healing, including the tissue and bone supporting your teeth. Low vitamin D is associated with periodontal inflammation, slow healing, and broader systemic patterns. If your gums bleed, your healing feels slow, or your dentist has mentioned bone loss, this is worth checking.

How is the Vitamin D sample collected?+

An at-home dried blood spot collection using a minimally invasive finger-stick. Same process as the Genetic Profile.

What does the Vitamin D Test measure?+
  • Total Vitamin D (25-OH)
  • Vitamin D2
  • Vitamin D3

Oral HPV Test

What is the Oral HPV Test?+

A saliva test that screens for 14 high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) associated with oral and oropharyngeal health.

Does a positive oral HPV result mean cancer?+

No. Most oral HPV infections clear naturally and don't lead to cancer. Persistent high-risk patterns may warrant ongoing professional evaluation and awareness, which is exactly the conversation we'll have on your walkthrough.

How is the Oral HPV sample collected?+

An at-home oral sample collection process. Prepaid mailer included.

Dental Implant Test

What is the Dental Implant Test?+

An implant-focused version of our oral microbiome evaluation. It assesses bacterial patterns, inflammatory trends, and microbial imbalances associated with implant health and peri-implant inflammation, the kind of bacteria that can threaten an implant before symptoms show up or anything changes on an x-ray.

What is peri-implantitis?+

It's an inflammatory condition affecting the tissue around dental implants. It can involve bacterial biofilms, tissue inflammation, and bone loss around the implant. It's also a leading cause of late-stage implant failure.

Can bacteria really affect dental implants?+

Yes. Research shows bacterial biofilms and inflammatory patterns directly influence peri-implant tissue health and long-term implant stability. The earlier you catch a problem, the more you can do about it.

Logistics & Ordering

Do I need a referral from a dentist or physician?+

No referral required. You can order any of our tests directly.

Are all the tests done at home?+

Yes. Collection kits ship directly to you with instructions and a prepaid return mailer.

How long does shipping take?+

Kits ship within 2 business days after you order. Delivery times depend on your location, the carrier, holidays, and any applicable international shipping requirements.

How are results reviewed?+

Every test includes a one-on-one virtual consultation with our clinical team to walk through your results in detail. You don't just receive a PDF and figure it out alone.

How long until I get my results?+

It depends on the test:

  • Oral Microbiome Test: about 2 to 3 weeks
  • Dental Implant Test: about 2 to 3 weeks
  • Oral HPV Test: about 2 to 3 weeks
  • Vitamin D Test: about 2 to 3 weeks
  • Genetic Profile: about 4 to 6 weeks

Timing is from when the lab receives your sample.

How are samples processed?+

Through professional clinical laboratory partners using validated methods. Our oral microbiome and implant tests are processed at a CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited laboratory using the SimplyPERIO platform from Spectrum Solutions.

Can I order more than one test?+

Yes. Order them individually, or save with our Full Picture Bundle, which combines the Oral Microbiome Test, Genetic Profile, and Vitamin D Test for $679 (saves $69 vs. buying separately).

What happens after I complete my test?+

Once your sample is processed and your report is ready, we reach out to schedule your 30-minute walkthrough. On the call, we discuss your results, explain what they mean for you, and build out personalized next steps.

Oral-Systemic Health

What does "oral-systemic" actually mean?+

Oral-systemic health is the relationship between your mouth and the rest of your body. They aren't separate. The mouth interacts constantly with your immune system, microbiome, inflammatory pathways, and barrier tissues, so what's happening there shows up everywhere else.

Why does the mouth matter for overall health?+

The mouth hosts one of the largest microbial communities in the body. It's the front door to your digestive and immune systems. Inflammation, microbial imbalance, and bacterial overgrowth in the mouth have been linked to cardiovascular risk, metabolic dysfunction, GI symptoms, and systemic inflammation throughout the body.

Why is The Mouth Lab biology-first?+

Because guessing doesn't work. Generic protocols don't work. Looking at your actual microbial and biological data does. Biology-first means every recommendation we make starts with what your tests show, not assumptions about what should be true.
